Santa Fe Rie - Miyazawa Photo By Kishin Shinoyama 1991
In 1999, eight years after the photo shoot, Rie Miyazawa’s career was in recovery. She had transitioned into serious acting. Then, on a quiet night in Tokyo, Miyazawa’s beloved 31-year-old brother, Eiji, was murdered in a botched robbery by a group of teenagers.
The final image chosen for the book's cover has become an indelible part of Japan's visual history. In it, Rie Miyazawa stands in a doorway, her naked body a study in contrasts: the soft, pale curve of her torso against the dark, textured wood of the doorframe; her arms raised, her gaze direct, calm, and almost unnervingly self-possessed. The photograph is not leering or exploitative. It is, as Shinoyama intended, a photograph of a "holy virgin"—innocent, exposed, but utterly in command of her own space. santa fe rie miyazawa photo by kishin shinoyama 1991
