This search term is used to locate unsecured, publicly indexed wallet.dat files on misconfigured web servers. A wallet.dat file contains private keys for cryptocurrency wallets (e.g., Bitcoin Core). If found, an attacker could potentially steal funds.
If a malicious actor finds a wallet.dat file through this method:
Avoid placing sensitive files like wallet.dat , .env files, or backup .json sheets anywhere within a web root folder. Use secure, encrypted SFTP, or local physical storage instead.
If a wallet.dat file is left unencrypted, anyone who downloads it can instantly import it into a local Bitcoin Core client and drain the funds. If it is encrypted, the attacker possesses the raw file locally, allowing them to run brute-force attacks or specialized Padding Oracle Attacks without alerting the owner. 3.
