Once aboard, the athletes realize they are trapped. Furthermore, the uncut cut includes two additional minutes of “tracking shots” through the train’s cargo cars. In the theatrical version, the arrogant team captain, Mikey (Thad Luckinbill), is subdued and killed relatively quickly. In the uncut cut, his sequence runs nearly four minutes longer. The surgeons on the train don’t just knock him out; they keep him conscious during a spinal extraction. The camera holds. We watch his bravado dissolve into infantile sobbing. Raff frames the shot from inside the surgical light, making the viewer complicit. This is not fun. It is clinical.
