Salahuddin Al Ayyubi, also known as Saladin, was a Kurdish-Egyptian Muslim leader born in 1137 AD in Tikrit, Iraq. He rose to prominence as a military commander in the Fatimid Caliphate and eventually became the Sultan of Egypt and Syria. He is best known for his victories against the Crusaders, particularly the recapture of Jerusalem in 1187 AD.
His rise was a gradual but masterful consolidation of power. From his roots as a soldier in the court of Nur ad-Din Zangi, Salahuddin eventually became the first Sultan of Egypt and Syria, uniting the Muslim world under the Ayyubid dynasty. But his achievements extend far beyond political unification. His military acumen, coupled with a reputation for extraordinary chivalry and justice, distinguished him from many of his contemporaries.
